Viola Wills was born in South Los
Angeles, California where she began her musical career in the church choir,
singing gospel music. At eight years of age her vocal talent won her
scholarship to the exclusive Los Angeles Conservatory of Music where she
studied classical piano under Earl Vorhees.
Viola made her
professional nightclub debut in her late teens. She later caught the eye of
noted producer Barry White and launched her recording career on LA-based Bronco
Records where she began arranging and writing her own material. She moved onto
the international scene when she was personally selected by Joe Cocker to lead
"The Sanctified Sisters", an ad-hoc back up chorus, to accompany
Cocker on his world tour. In addition to Barry White and Joe Cocker,
Viola also worked with James Gadsen, Smokey Robinson, George Benson, the Jazz
Crusaders, and many others before pursuing her solo recording career in Europe.
After the tour with Joe Cocker, Viola moved to
Great Britain to resume her solo career, becoming a major recording artist for
Island Records and later Ariola-Hansa Productions. Her first major track,
"Gonna Get Along Without You Now,” was a smash hit and launched Viola into
the international pop and dance markets. In America, she continued to
score high on the charts with no less than a half-dozen cover songs including
her rendition of "Stormy Weather” and her remake of the Gordon Lightfoot
classic, “If You Could Read My Mind,” the original dance mix!
Not content to rest on the laurels of her new
"diva" status in the dance market, Viola returned to Europe to enjoy
another smash hit. But this time it was with her self-penned "Dare
to Dream", a jazz-funk ballad.
Determined to break into the mainstream of America,
Vi returned Stateside and studied acting and music under noted Scott Smith,
Mark Almy, Yvonne Powell and Terry Nicholson.
She landed a part in the dramatic theater piece
"Inherit The Wind" and soon after, wrote and produced her one-woman
show "Willspower" at the Top Hat Theater in Palm Springs,
California. Her "brilliant" characterization and vocalization
of Alice in the Tony award winning "Big River" followed this.
Viola is truly a versatile artist, comfortable with many facets of the
theater.
Viola is an energetic lady who still tours
worldwide promoting her "Eurodance" music, although she prefers the
comfort and convenience of working at home with elite Palm Springs musicians,
or on her own at the keyboards-preferably the grand piano, composing jazz tunes
her own way. Who knows where else this energetic lady will pop up…
It is for certain there will always be an audience
ready to be charged up by Viola’s positive, fun, spirit.
