Seth Binzer, also known as Shifty Shellshock, rose to fame in 2001 when his band Crazy Town’s song “Butterfly” hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Binzer had been collaborating with Crazy Town co-founder Bret Mazur (aka Epic) since 1995 when they called themselves The Brimstone Sluggers. Both Binzer and Mazur grew up in Los Angeles, with connections to the music industry; Seth’s father, Rollin Binzer directed the Rolling Stones performance film Ladies and Gentleman, The Rolling Stones and Bret’s father had managed Billy Joel. At a young age, Binzer already had a passion for hip-hop and alternative rock, citing some of his early influences as N.W.A, Cypress Hill, Beastie Boys and The Cure.
By the time Crazy Town’s first album, The Gift of the Game, was released in 1999, Rust Epique, James Bradley Jr., Doug Miller, Adam Goldstein (DJ AM) and Anthony “Trouble” Valli had joined the band. Following the release, Crazy Town toured with the Red Hot Chili Peppers and again with Ozzfest in 2000, which they were asked to leave after an incident in which Binzer drunkenly threw a chair through a window. In 2001, Crazy Town’s single “Butterfly” reached No. 1 in 15 countries and The Gift of the Game went on to sell 2.5 million units worldwide. Despite their success, Crazy Town broke up in 2003 after the release of their second album Darkhorse.
In 2002, Binzer collaborated with Paul Oakenfold on the song “Starry Eyed Surprise”, which was released as a single and on Oakenfold’s solo album Bunkka. “Starry Eyed Surprise” hit No. 6 on the U.K. Singles chart and No. 41 on the US Billboard Hot 100. Later, “Starry Eyed Surprise” also appeared on Binzer’s own solo album Happy Love Sick in 2004 as well as on Oakenfold’s 2007 Greatest Hits and Remixes, Vol. 1.
Throughout his life, Binzer has struggled with drugs and alcohol. His troubles with addiction have been documented on the VH1 reality series Celebrity Rehab, which first aired in early 2008. After getting clean and sober on Season 1 of the show, Binzer relapsed and was brought back to treatment during the filming of Season 2. Binzer also appeared in seasons 1 and 2 of the Celebrity Rehab spin off show Sober House.
Now on the straight and narrow, Binzer is ready to reclaim his throne at the top of the charts. As Shifty’s Crazy Town, Binzer is currently working with Paul Oakenfold producer TC (aka Spitfire) on the final mixes of his next full-length album, White Gold, to be released in early 2012. The album features special collaborations with Too Short, Nick Nicateen, and the up and coming UK diva Alex Hepburn. In support of the album, Shifty’s Crazy Town will be embarking on a world tour scheduled to hit 5 continents. Special advanced releases of singles from the album White Gold will be “leaked” in Europe and Asia in late 2011.
In addition to his new upcoming album, Binzer has been working with his old friend Pasquale Rotella, producer of the Electric Daisy Carnival (ECD) dance music festivals. Together they are working on various projects including Krush Kill.
With a number of television and film projects also in the pipeline, 2012 looks to be a big year for Binzer. Lately, he’s also been popping in for some surprise DJ sets at the Hollywood hot spots Drai’s and LAX. As Binzer recently told reporters on the red carpet, “I’ve still got a few tricks up my sleeve, but more importantly it’s just good to be happy again.”
